Synopsis: Manya, investigators said, had married Vivekananda after several years of courtship. Though both hailed from Inam Veerapur Village under the Hubballi Rural Police, Manya’s family was opposed to the relationship since the couple belonged to different castes.
A man and his relatives allegedly killed his six-month pregnant daughter in a suspected case of honour killing in Karnataka’s Hubbali district.
Identifying the victim as 20-year-old Manya, police said her father, Prakashgowda Patil, and relatives Veeranagowda Patil and Arun Gowda Patil were arrested in connection with the crime.
Manya, investigators said, had married Vivekananda after several years of courtship. Though both hailed from Inam Veerapur under the Hubballi Rural Police, Manya’s family was opposed to the relationship since they belonged to different castes.
The woman belonged to the Lingayat community, while Vivekanda is a Dalit.
Police said Manya stood firm on marrying Vivekanda, and when the opposition from her family grew stronger, the couple registered their marriage in May and shifted to Haveri, fearing reprisal from the woman’s family.
After the marriage, the police had initiated a reconciliatory meeting with both families, but their efforts failed.
The couple returned to the village on 8 December since Manya was in an advanced stage of pregnancy. On learning about their return, Prakashgowda and his relatives barged into Vivekanda’s house and attacked the family with lethal weapons on Sunday, 21 December.
Besides Manya, the men attacked Vivekanda, and his parents, Subash and Renuba, were too attacked. Though the pregnant woman was shifted to a hospital, her life could not be saved.
