An Indian-Canadian man from Karnataka was killed in a suspected targeted shooting in Toronto on Saturday, the Toronto Police Service (TPS) said in a statement on Sunday.
The victim has been identified as Chandan Kumar Raja Nandakumar, 37, who hailed from Thyamagondu near Nelamangala in Bengaluru Rural. An IT professional, he had been living in Brampton, Greater Toronto Area.
Initial reports said Kumar was sitting in a while-coloured SUV when unidentified men in another vehicle opened fire on him and fled. The SUV had taken multiple shots.
“At approximately 3:31 p.m., police responded to a call for a shooting in the parking lot of Woodbine Shopping Centre in the Rexdale Boulevard and Highway 27 area,” TPS said in a statement, which also urged the public to help identify the assailants.
Officers at the scene found Kumar with gunshot wounds and transported him to a hospital, where he was declared dead. No one has been arrested in the case.
TPS’ Homicide and Missing Persons Unit said the latest was Toronto’s third homicide since 1 January 2026.
In Karnataka, Kumar’s parents have sought the central government’s help to bring the body home for performing his final rites.
“We never expected this, not even in our dreams. We had been asking him to come back since it has been six to seven years since he had left for Canada. He did not listen,” his father, Nanda Kumar told reporters.
Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara said the state, too, has sought the assistance of the Union Ministry of External Affairs through the state police department to bring the mortal remains of the deceased to India.
“I have instructed the officials to provide support to the grieving family members residing in Karnataka,” he posted on X.
