Accused Tejas and victim Suchitra.

The police have arrested a 23-year-old man from the town of Hassan in Karnataka for murdering an engineering student apparently because she ended her relationship with him.

The deceased, Suchitra, was a final-year student pursuing a computer science degree at the Government Engineering College in Mosalehosahalli in the Hassan district.

She reportedly called it quits with Tejas, a mechanical engineering graduate from the same college, as he had turned abusive towards her after he found out about her past relationship.

‘Constant interference’

“Tejas had come prepared with a knife to kill Suchitra if she did not listen to him,” a senior police officer told South First.

They were in a relationship for the past six to eight months, said the police.

Tejas recently learnt about one of Suchitra’s past relationships and started to ask her about it. He reportedly grew furious over the fact that Suchitra had hidden this relationship from him.

This led to arguments between them whenever they would meet, said the officer.

Suchitra was fed up with Tejas’ “constant interference” and told him that she wanted to end her relationship with him, he said.

She felt upset about Tejas digging into her past and checking her background after they had fallen in love.

As he was constantly accusing her of hiding her past from him, Suchitra decided to call it quits, and this enraged Tejas further, said the officer.

According to the police, Tejas called Suchitra to meet him in the town of Hassan on Thursday evening to sort out their differences.

After Suchitra arrived, Tejas took her around 13 kilometres from the city on his motorcycle, heading towards the Kunti Betta hills, where they apparently quarrelled again.

“After arriving there, the two again quarrelled, following which he took out a knife and slit her throat,” Additional Superintendent of Police MK Thammaiah told South First.

Tejas then fled the spot on his two-wheeler, leaving the profusely bleeding Suchitra behind.

A few people in the locality found her in a pool of blood and took her to a nearby hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries, the police said.

The Hassan rural police have registered a case of murder, booking Tejas under Section 302 of the IPC and immediately arresting him from Hassan Town.

“Tejas is said to have admitted to the crime. We conducted a spot inquest on Friday, and collected evidence. However, we are yet to recover the murder weapon,” Thammaiah told South First.
