Synopsis: The accused initially demanded ₹16,000 for releasing ₹13.90 lakh deposited in a court, but later brought down the amount to ₹13,000. On receiving a complaint, the Lokayukta Police laid a trap and caught the accused, allegedly while accepting the bribe.
In a rare case of the Lokayukta snaring a central government employee, an accountant of the Accountant-General office in Bengaluru was allegedly caught red-handed accepting a bribe of ₹13,000 from a complainant.
The Karnataka Lokayukta Police said the accountant, Adarsha Kumar Singh, demanded ₹16,000 from a Peenya resident to release ₹13.90 lakh, deposited in connection with a case at the Principal Senior Civil Judge Court. The deposit was made based on the court’s directive.
During further negotiations, Singh allegedly brought the amount down to ₹13,000.
Based on a complaint by N Ramesh, the Peenya resident, the Lokayukta Police, under the supervision of its superintendent Shiva Prakash Devaraju, laid a trap and arrested Singh while accepting ₹13,000 on Thursday, 2 July.
The police registered a case under Section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Further investigation is underway.
