Karnataka horror: Man arrested in Bagalkote for attacking partner with acid for refusing to open door at midnight

Police in the Bagalkote district of Karnataka have arrested a 40-year-old man for attacking his live-in partner — a 32-year-old woman — with acid on Tuesday, 28 May, because she refused to open the door late at night in the Gaddankeri Cross area near the district headquarters.

The victim has been identified as Lakshmi Badiger, 32, a resident of nearby Vijayapura City. She had been living with the accused — whom the cops identified as Mounesh Pattar — for three years.

She reportedly sustained grievous injuries and was being treated at a hospital in Bagalkote.

A case was registered at the Kaladagi Police Station in this regard, with the cops booking Mounesh under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 326A (causing grievous hurt by use of acid), 504 (offences against public tranquillity and peace), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.

The police also arrested Mounesh Pattar — a sculptor by profession. He has been sent to judicial custody for 15 days.

The attack

Kaladagi Police Sub Inspector (PSI) Vittal H told South First: “The victim and accused separated from their family and were living together for the past three years at Gaddankeri Cross.”

He added: “They are both married,  but to different persons, and have separated from their partner.”

From their previous marriage, the victim has an eight-year-old daughter and the accused has three children, said the PSI.

He also said: “They had a clash over financial issues around 10 days ago. She demanded that he return some money she gave him.”

The PSI continued: “Mounesh assured her that he would return the money in 10 days, and left home. She then blocked his phone number.”

He also said: “Mounesh tried to reach her for eight continuous days over the phone, but could not. When he returned home at midnight on Tuesday, she refused to open the door.”

Enraged by this, he attacked her with the acid-laced water, said Vittal, adding that the victim somehow managed to escape despite being grievously injured.

“She sustained injuries to her face and eye. The treatment is underway. The accused has been arrested and sent to judicial custody for 15 days,” he said.
