Synopsis: The former MP from Hassan petitioned the high court again after his earlier plea was rejected based on the seriousness of the allegations and doubts that he might influence or intimidate witnesses.
The High Court of Karnataka is hearing the bail application of former Lok Sabha MP and Janata Dal (Secular) leader Prajwal Revanna, who was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting multiple women.
The former MP from Hassan petitioned the high court again after his earlier plea was rejected based on the seriousness of the allegations and doubts that he might influence or intimidate witnesses.
Arguing for Prajwal, Senior Advocate Prabhuling K Navadgi earlier submitted to the court that there had been a notable change in circumstances since the previous ruling. It was argued that Prajwal could be granted bail due to the prolonged delay in the trial.
When the court took up the case for hearing on Wednesday, 2 July, Special Public Prosecutor Ravi Varma Kumar pointed out that Prajwal had earlier approached a trial court to restrain the publication of certain videos of the alleged crime. It was also submitted that the accused had left the country after complaints were raised against him.
The court will further hear the arguments at 4 pm.
Former minister and MLA HD Revanna and his son Prajwal, had allegedly sexually assaulted several women employed as maids in their house, according to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Karnataka police.
The SIT made the accusations in separate chargesheets submitted to the Special Court of Electoral Representatives. The probe team filed the first chargesheet, running into 2,144 pages, against Revanna, 66, and Prajwal, 34, on 23 August, while the 1,632-page second chargesheet was submitted on 9 September.
Holenarsipura Town police registered the case pertaining to the first chargesheet on 28 April 2024, while SIT recorded the second case on 8 May. The second one, filed on charges of rape, mentioned 113 witnesses.
Besides rape, Prajwal has been booked for sexually assaulting several women and filming the acts. The video clips were circulated on social media and visual media. He also faces charges of destroying evidence from his mobile phone on which the videos were recorded.
Prajwal has been in judicial custody since his arrest on 31 May. After the videos started circulating, Prajwal left the country after casting his vote in the Lok Sabha election on 26 April but was arrested at the Bengaluru International Airport on his return.
