The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday, 18 June, granted Bhavani Revanna anticipatory bail in a kidnapping case.

Bhavani, the mother of sexual violence accused Prajwal Revanna, is facing charges of kidnapping a woman, who was later allegedly sexually abused by her son.

A single bench headed by Justice Krishna S Dixit granted the anticipatory bail to Bhavani and refrained her from entering Mysuru and Hassan districts.

According to the Bar and Bench, Justice Krishna S Dixit pronounced the order on Tuesday morning, when he also urged that there should not be any media trial of the case and said that unnecessary arrests of women should be avoided.

The judge further emphasised that “A woman should not be unnecessarily arrested in criminal cases, more so since in India, they are the ‘hub’ of the family.”

The order copy is yet to be published on the court’s website

She was granted interim anticipatory bail by Justice Krishna S Dixit subject to her appearing before the investigating officer of SIT by 1 pm on 31 May, and fully cooperating with the probe.

Sexual violence case

The JD(S) first family, especially former prime minister HD Deve Gowda’s son Revanna, his wife Bhavani and son Prajwal, is in a legal soup after scores of explicit videos came out on 21 April. Prajwal, who unsuccessfully sought reelection from the Hassan Lok Sabha segment as an NDA candidate, fled to Germany soon after the polling.

The Karnataka government formed the SIT to probe the cases against Prajwal on the recommendation of the Karnataka State Commission for Women chairperson Nagalakshmi Chowdhary, who wrote to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to investigate the matter.

Prajwal, facing sexual abuse allegations, returned from Germany on 31 May, and was immediately arrested by the SIT at the Bengaluru airport. Prajwal is in police custody till 24 June.

Case against Bhavani

The case against Bhavani and Revanna pertains to the kidnapping of a woman from KR Nagar.

After the explicit videos showing women being sexually abused allegedly by their son Prajwal came out in the open, the victim from KR Nagar in Mysuru was abducted by Revanna’s confidant.

The case was registered on a complaint lodged by the 20-year-old son of the victim. The complainant also said that his mother figured in the video where she was tied and raped allegedly by Prajwal.

In the first case registered against him at the Holenarasipura Town police station in Hassan on 28 April, Prajwal is accused of sexually harassing a 47-year-old former maid. He is listed as accused number two, while his father Revanna, is accused number one.

Prajwal has been so far booked in three cases of sexual assault. There are also charges of rape against him.
