The five guarantee schemes launched by the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government are exerting strain on the state’s finances, warned a new report from the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG).
The report, which was presented in the Assembly on Tuesday, 19 August, on state finances for the year 2023-24, revealed that the five guarantee schemes reduced capital expenditure towards infrastructure by around ₹5,229 crore.
The Congress government implemented the five pre-poll guarantees — Gruha Lakshmi, Gruha Jyoti, Anna Bhagya, Shakti and Yuva Nidhi — during the 2023-24 fiscal year.
The audit report stated that these schemes accounted for 15 percent of the revenue expenditure in 2023-24. The increase in growth of expenditure on the account of these schemes also contributed to the revenue deficit of ₹9,271 crore, the report said.
