Synopsis: The move follows directions issued by Chief Minister DK Shivakumar during a departmental review meeting on July 1, where officials were asked to initiate measures to curb illegal mining.
In a major administrative overhaul aimed at cracking down on illegal mining and breaking entrenched local influence, the Karnataka government has transferred 160 officers of the Department of Mines and Geology with immediate effect.
The transfers include 131 geologists, 23 senior geologists and six deputy directors.
The order said officers who had remained in the same or neighbouring districts for prolonged periods had led to administrative and public complaints, necessitating the reshuffle to restore transparency, accountability and objectivity without affecting the department’s revenue collection.
