Synopsis: The North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation suspended a driver-cum-conductor whose video of performing namaz in the middle of a journey went viral.
The North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) on Thursday, 1 May, suspended a driver-cum-conductor whose video of performing namaz in the middle of a journey went viral.
He has been suspended on the charges of dereliction of duty and causing inconvenience to the public by performing prayer while on duty.
The action has been taken after an investigation by senior officials of the safety division. The driver is identified as Nayaz, attached to the Hangal depot in Haveri district.
A video of Nayaz had gone viral on social media, where he was seen performing namaz in the bus that was travelling from Hangal to Vishalgad. In the video, the driver seemed to have stopped the bus in the middle of the journey to offer prayers while passengers were waiting for him to start the bus.
Karnataka Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy had instructed the managing director of NWKRTC to investigate the matter and take disciplinary action if the driver was found guilty.
“Action should be taken to prevent the recurrence of these types of incidents in future. The staff working in a public service have to follow certain rules and regulations compulsorily. Even though everyone has the right to practice any religion, they can do so except during office hours. It is objectionable to perform namaz by stopping the bus midway, even when passengers are travelling in the bus,” the minister had said.
