Synopsis: Congress MLA Yashwanthraygoud Patil has resigned from the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, protesting the exclusion of Indi and Chadchan taluks in Vijayapura district from the State’s drought-hit list. In his resignation letter, he said he had repeatedly sought drought-hit status for the two taluks but was unable to get the state government to act.
Congress MLA Yashwanthraygoud Patil, who represents Indi in Vijayapura district, has resigned from the Karnataka Legislative Assembly in protest against the State government’s decision to exclude Indi and Chadchan taluks from the list of drought-hit areas.
In his resignation letter to Assembly Speaker UT Khader on Tuesday, 22 September, Patil said farmers in the two taluks were facing distress after borrowing money to purchase seeds and fertilisers, only to see their crops wither because of inadequate rainfall. He also cited shortages of drinking water and fodder affecting people and livestock.

Patil said he had written to Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on 28 August, seeking drought-hit status for Indi and Chadchan. He noted that 11 of Vijayapura district’s 13 taluks had been declared drought-affected, while Indi and Chadchan were left out.
“I am a ruling party MLA and have made several requests to our government in a sensitive manner so that it does not cause embarrassment. But our words and feelings are not being valued,” Patil wrote.
“In today’s political situation, those who are strong and exert pressure are getting recognition, while people like us, who are mild-natured, are not getting recognition for any work.”
Patil said he was unable to do justice to the voters who elected him and, therefore, was voluntarily resigning his membership of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.
