Synopsis: In a major setback, the Supreme Court rejected Congress MLA Vinay Kulkarni’s bail appeal in the 2016 murder of BJP leader Yogesh Gowda. He has been remanded to CBI custody

In a setback for Congress MLA and former Minister Vinay Kulkarni, the Supreme Court rejected his appeal against cancelation of his bail.

He surrendered before the Special Court for People’s Representatives in Bengaluru on Friday. The Court ordered that he be handed over to the CBI and sent to Judicial Custody.

The case pertains to the murder of  BJP leader and Hebballi Zilla Panchayat member Yogesh Gowda. He was  hacked to death at his own gym on 15 June 2016, in Dharwad.

Kulkarni is accused of being the prime conspirator in the murder. When the CBI took over the case, they named Kulkarni as one of the key accused.

Kulkarni’s petition dismissed

On 6 June, the Supreme Court had canceled Kulkarni’s bail and had directed him to surrender within a week. He had appealed to the top court for more time stating that he has to participate in a meeting scheduled this week.

The two-judge vacation bench, led by Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra and Justice Manmohan, heard his petition and dismissed it.

The Supreme Court had allowed a plea filed by the CBI that sought cancelation of the bail.  The CBI had informed the court that Kulkarni and another accused had tried to contact and influence witnesses. This was a serious violation of the conditions imposed upon them when bail was granted.
