Karnataka Congress leader and former speaker of Karnataka assembly, KR Ramesh Kumar sparked a controversy on Thursday, 21 July, at a protest staged by the Congress party.

While addressing a gathering of Congress workers and supporters protesting the Enforcement Directorate’s  summons to party president Sonia Gandhi, Kumar said, “We have earned enough money for 3-4 generations in the name of Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi. If we cannot sacrifice this much, it won’t be good. We have to be ready to make some sacrifice.”

The statement was made at Bengaluru’s freedom park in the presence of several Karnataka Congress leaders.

Reaction of BJP leaders

As the statement created an uproar, leaders of the ruling BJP in the state did not miss the chance to take jibes at Kumar.

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, while addressing a press meet on Thursday night, took a sarcastic dig at Kumar’s statement.

“He is a senior, he is well experienced, we have immense respect for him. We keep listening about him in the assembly. He generally speaks facts and I believe that he has spoken the truth,” said Bommai.

State Health Minister Sudhakar K also slammed Ramesh Kumar in a tweet: “Congratulations to the brilliant leader who described the Congress party’s 60-year #LootIndia program very beautifully!”

“I congratulate Ramesh Kumar for spelling out the truth. His remarks show the extent of loot in the country by Congress leaders,” said Revenue Minister R Ashok.

The Congress legislator responded to the jibes in a tweet: “Some have taken note of the debate going on in some media about the last sentence of my speech at protest…Throughout the speech, I addressed the country and people and not the Congress party.”

Kumar’s past controversies

The former Karnataka assembly speaker and Srinivaspur MLA has had a penchant for making headlines with controversial comments in the past.

“There’s a saying, when rape is inevitable, lie down and enjoy it. That’s exactly the position in which you are,” he said in the assembly in December 2021.

In 2019, as a speaker of Karnataka assembly, he equated himself with a rape victim and said, “If someone asks her what a happened, she says the rape may have happened once, but the questions in court raped me 100 times. This happens to be my situation.”
