Karnataka Congress hits out at BJP government with list of failure

As the BS Bommai-led BJP government in Karnataka prepares to celebrate one year, the state unit of the Congress has launched a scathing attack listing out its failure.

The Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) on Tuesday, 26 July, released a report card citing the failures of the BJP government.

The Congress excoriated the ruling BJP claiming:

  • Contractors are committing suicide because the state government was asking 40-percent commission on every project.
  • The government has been ignoring the demands of 42,000 ASHA workers, who served selflessly during Covid-19.
  • The government failed to provide support prices to farmers of the state.
  • Despite a High court order, the government could fill only 10,000 potholes across Bengaluru.

Before releasing the performance report, KPCC chief DK Shivakumar said, “In three years of governance of the BJP, Bengaluru has become the corruption capital of India. The BJP is celebrating Bhrashtutsava — a festival of corruption.”

The BJP government at the centre imposed 5% GST on food grains but this state could not even resist and express displeasure.

The KPCC chief alleged that the BJP government didn’t even spare the Covid-19 pandemic from corruption.

Shivakumar also condemned the moral-policing incident of Mangaluru on 25 July by Bajarang Dal members. He claimed the police administration had been shielding anti-social elements.

Former chief minister and Leader of Opposition Siddaramaiah also took on the incumbent government.

He said, “Bommai has had a disastrous tenure of one year. In the history of Karnataka politics, it never happened that sitting ministers sought 40-percent commission from contractors of the state. A contractor committed suicide, fed up of the commission raj.”

He also referred to the arrest of bureaucrats — both IAS and IPS — on charges of corruption, like in the PSI scam, as a watershed moment of the Bommai government.

He also alleged that the Bommai government was embroiled in issues like the hijab ban and halal ban, proving the crumbling status of the law and order situation of the state.

Bommai completes a year tenure on 28 July, and anniversary celebrations of the BJP government in Karnataka are scheduled to take place that day.
