The second round of the breakfast meeting between Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar took place on Tuesday, 2 December.

Siddaramaiah visited Shivakumar’s residence for the meeting. The first round took place on Saturday, when Shivakumar had breakfast at the chief minister’s residence.

Following directions from the Congress high command, the two leaders are meeting to diffuse simmering tensions amid rumours of an intense power tussle, which was dismissed by both of them.

After an initial round of discussions between Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah, they had breakfast together with Shivakumar’s brother DK Suresh and Kunigal MLA HD Ranganath.

‘Will abide by the high command’

Addressing a press conference after the breakfast meeting, Siddaramaiah said that they would abide by the decision of the high command, which includes Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge. Responding to a question over whether he would go to Delhi, Siddaramaiah said, “If they call, I will go.”

The chief minister further said that they discussed party-related matters during the breakfast, including the upcoming session in Belagavi from 8 December. “We will in one voice counter the Opposition,” Shivakumar said, regarding the no-confidence motion that the BJP is planning to move.

“Our government is pro-farmer. We also discussed issues related to maize and sugarcane,” Siddaramaiah said. He reiterated that all their party MLAs are united and they would take on the Opposition together. “DK Shivakumar and I are united; we will be united in the future as well,” he said.

Siddaramaiah added that he will meet All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary KC Venugopal in Mangaluru on Wednesday, where he is attending an event as the chief guest. He added that an all-party meeting is likely to happen on 8 December in Delhi, as the Assembly session’s first day may be adjourned after obituaries due to the recent demise of MLA HY Meti.

“Hosted the Hon’ble CM for breakfast at my residence today as we reaffirm our commitment to good governance and the continued development of our state under the Congress vision,” Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said in a post on X.

Earlier, Shivakumar had dismissed rumours about any difference of opinion between them.

“There is no difference (of opinion) between me and the chief minister. As the party president, I know my limits. Nowhere have I made any comments or had any difference of opinion with the CM. We are all working together,” he told reporters. He further said that their aim is the 2028 and 2029 elections and that they would chalk out a strategy for the same.

Meanwhile, the Opposition BJP is planning to move a no-confidence motion against the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government in the upcoming winter session of the state Assembly in Belagavi.

While announcing the plan in Udupi on 27 November, BJP state general secretary and former minister V Sunil Kumar said his party would first discuss the matter with its partners in the National Democratic Alliance.

Kumar, who represents Karkala in the Assembly, however, added that the BJP would not stake a claim to form the government even if the Congress ran into trouble. The Congress has a comfortable majority in the 224-member Assembly.
