Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah wrote to Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers JP Nadda regarding the severe shortage of Urea.

Sharing the letter on X, the chief minister wrote: “Karnataka’s farmers are facing a severe shortage of Urea. Against our requirement of 6.8 lakh MT from April to July, only 5.1 lakh MT has been supplied by the Union Govt. Early monsoons and expanded crop coverage have spiked demand, creating unrest among farmers. I have urged Shri JP Nadda to immediately expedite the supply of 1.65 lakh MT of Urea to safeguard the interests of our farmers.”

The letter read: “Government of India has allocated 11,17,000 MT of Urea to Karnataka for Kharif-2025, out of which the quantity supplied till date is only 5,16,959 MT, whereas the State’s requirement of Urea from April to July is 6,80,655 MT.”

“Further, some of the fertilizer companies have expressed their inability to supply Urea fertilizer as per the allocation made by the Government of India. I would like to highlight that there is urgent need for supply of Urea in the State as,

  • State has received monsoon early this year and at the same time area coverage under different crops has increased, compared to previous years.
  • Early release of water in command areas of Tungabhadra, Cauvery and Krishna has resulted in early sowing activity.
  • Area under Maize which is high fertilizer consuming crop, has increased by about 2 lakh hectares and area under Pulses has decreased compared to previous years.
  • About 13,000 Ha. of pre-kharif Area has been resown

“In view of the above factors, there is spurt in demand for Urea fertilizer and shortage is creating unrest among farmers. Therefore, I request you direct the concerned to expedite the supply of short fall of 1,65,541 MT of Urea, as per the State’s allocation in the interest of the farmers,” the chief minister added.
