Karnataka Cabinet Approves Redrawing of Shettihalli Wildlife Sanctuary Boundary

The Karnataka Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, has approved the redrawing of boundaries of the Shettihalli Wildlife Sanctuary in Shivamogga district, Forest Minister Eshwar B. Khandre announced on 17 July. Originally notified as a sanctuary in 1974 with an area of 395.60 sq. km, the revised boundary will now cover 396.165 sq. km—ensuring no reduction in the sanctuary’s original area.

Minister Khandre explained that the original 1974 notification had inadvertently included roads, bus stands, residential zones, patta lands, and areas designated for Sharavathi rehabilitation. To address inconvenience caused to residents and infrastructure projects, the Forest Department proposed a boundary correction, which has now received approval from the National Board for Wildlife.

The revised notification aims to preserve ecological integrity while balancing the needs of local communities. A fresh notification reflecting the updated boundary will be issued shortly, marking a key step in sustainable wildlife conservation and land-use planning.
