Karnataka Cabinet Approves Biodegradable Carry Bags in Key Policy Shift(Supplied)
The Karnataka Cabinet has approved amendments to the 2016 notification banning plastic carry bags, now allowing the production, storage, and sale of biodegradable (compostable) carry bags. Forest, Ecology and Environment Minister Eshwar B. Khandre announced the decision on 17 July, citing the development of plant-based bags that decompose within 180 days as the reason for the revision.
Previously, the 2016 notification had prohibited the manufacture and sale of various plastic items, including bags, banners, plates, and cups. The amendment aligns with the Centre’s 2021 Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules and also covers pre-packaged, sealed plastic used in packaging. The move aims to support environmentally friendly alternatives while maintaining regulatory clarity in line with national guidelines.
