The Karnataka government on Friday, 7 March, announced that movie tickets in theatres including multiplexes will be capped at ₹200.
The announcement was made as part of the 2025-26 budget presentation by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
The current announcement is set to bring relief to cine-goers, as the prices of movie tickets had been as high as ₹600 in certain multiplexes in Bengaluru.
However, this is not the first time, such a cap was imposed. In 2017, when Siddaramaiah himself was the chief minister, the government imposed a similar order. But, the order was challenged in the Karnataka High Court.
The government is also set to develop an OTT platform to promote Kannada films. To preserve Kannada movies depicting social, historical and cultural values, the government is set to create a digital and non-digital repository of Kannada movies at a cost of ₹3 crore.
Apart from the price cap, the Siddaramaiah government has also announced that it will develop a multiplex movie theatre complex under Public Private Partnership (PPP) on 2.5-acre land owned by the Karnataka Film Academy in Nandini Layout, Bengaluru.
Siddaramaiah further announced that the government with the aim of establishing an international-level Film City in Mysuru under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, has made an investment of ₹500 crore. He further added that a 150-acre plot of land has been transferred to the Department of Information and Public Relations for this project, which is set to be completed in the coming years.
The state government will also grant the cinema sector industry status and extend the benefits provided under the Industrial Policy to the film industry.
