Karnataka BJP MLA Bharat Shetty booked for ‘slap Rahul Gandhi’ remark, sparks row

A case has been registered against Karnataka BJP MLA Dr Y Bharat Shetty, for his incendiary remarks against Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

A FIR has been filed by the police at Kavoor police station following a complaint against the Mangalore North MLA for his provocative speech mentioning Gandhi made during a protest on Monday, 8 July, between 10:30 am and 11:30 am at Kavuru Junction.

He was addressing a gathering of around 100-150 BJP workers, prompting calls for legal action.

During his speech, Shetty said that Gandhi should be locked up and slapped inside the Parliament for his alleged anti-Hindu remarks. According to the FIR, Shetty referred to Gandhi as a “madman” and suggested he should be thrown out of Parliament.

He said, “I feel like someone should slap him twice on the cheek; Only by doing that will he come to his senses.”

“I am a Hindu. If anyone speaks against Hindus, then such people must be taught a lesson. We should take up arms and fight if needed,” he further said.

The FIR stated that Mangalore Dakshina MLA Vedavyas Kamath, Mangalore Lok Sabha Constituency MP Captain Brijesh Chowta, and numerous corporators were present at the meeting, appearing to endorse Shetty’s inflammatory speech.

They have been named in the FIR for their roles in supporting and instigating Shetty’s remarks.

Shetty’s derogatory comments continued as he compared Gandhi to a stray dog passing by the protestors, stating, “Rahul Gandhi is not as smart as a stray dog.”

The FIR stated that the crowd, including MLAs and MPs, applauded and encouraged Shetty’s insults, which were directed at Gandhi in singular terms.

Referring to Rahul’s speech in the parliament, the Mangalore North MLA continued that the BJP workers are ready to destroy the Congress party if they make up their minds.”

“If anyone talks about Hinduism, we are ready for any fight using weapons. We are not afraid of a case being filed against us,” Shetty said.

According to the FIR, Shetty has been accused of provoking people to fight and creating communal tensions and animosity.

It calls for appropriate action to be taken against Shetty and the elected officials who supported his remarks, including MLA Vedavyas Kamath and MP Capt Brijesh Chowta, to prevent any escalation of communal discord.

The Congress had strongly condemned Shetty’s remarks against Gandhi.
