The Bengaluru City Police in a joint operation with the Central Crime Branch (CCB) arrested a radicalised youth from the Tilaknagar area of the city on the night of Sunday, 24 July.

The accused, 23-year-old Assam resident Akhtar Hussain, was staying with four youths in a rented room in Tilaknagar. All of them were working as delivery executives.

According to the police, the accused was in touch with a terror organisation through his social-media profiles.

City Police Commissioner CH Pratap Reddy told reporters, “An extremely radicalised youth was arrested based on inputs from various agencies. A case has been registered and investigation is on to unearth his association with any other organisation.”

He added, “Further details of the case would be shared after the accused is produced in court. The arrest was based on enough evidence.”

The commissioner also said, “Bengaluru being a vibrant city, people across the country and the world come [here]. We request all who come to the city to be responsible citizens and not indulge in radical and illegal activities.”

The CCB and Bengaluru police team kept a close watch on Hussain’s activities for a couple of days, before nabbing him. His roommates have also been taken into custody for interrogation.

This is the second incident of such an arrest in the city in as many months.

In June, an alleged member of the terror outfit Hizbul Mujahideen, Talib Hussain, was arrested in a joint operation by a Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) special team and the Bengaluru City Police from a residential area in Okalipuram.

He was arrested in connection with the targeted killing of Hindus in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Bengaluru Crime Branch, Karnataka’s anti-terror squad, and the Internal Security Division in January 2020 foiled a possible terror plot by arresting several suspected members of outfits linked directly or indirectly with the Islamic State group.
