Police in Shivamogga

The Shivamogga Police on Tuesday, 16 August, arrested three men in connection with the violence that erupted on Monday over the removal of Vinayak Savarkar’s poster from a circle in Shivamogga city.

The three arrested in the case have been identified as Mohammed Jabi (30), Nadeem (25) and Abdul Rehman (25).

Jabi was undergoing treatment in hospital after he sustained a bullet injury on his right leg.

Doddapete circle PI Abhaya Prakash told South First, “The three people were arrested on Monday under IPC Section 307 (attempt to murder). Prohibitory orders under Section 144 are in effect on Tuesday in Shivamogga city and Bhadravati town. The decision to extend it would be taken by senior officials on Tuesday evening after assessing the situation.”

Prakash added, “As a result of Section 144, educational institutions were shut with curbed public affairs on Tuesday.”

Shivamogga is known as a communally sensitive area, and is under the close watch of the police force.

Prakash said additional forces from neighbouring districts were also on alert, with complete police deployment in Shivamogga city and Bhadravati town. The investigation and interrogations were underway to garner more details about the case.

ADGP (Law & Order) Alok Kumar on Tuesday told reporters, “We are urging people to not come out unnecessarily. We’ll seize their properties, and we’ll inform it the to the district collector. We’ve deployed enough police personnel. We already have 15 platoons, and have asked for more. The situation remains under control as of now.”

On Monday, violence broke out between two groups over the poster row. A portrait of Vinayak Savarkar at the Ameer Ahmed Circle in the city became the bone of contention when a group of Muslim youths demanded its removal, which was opposed by another group.

This led to heated arguments between the groups. It took a violent turn when 26-year-old Prem Singh was stabbed.

Immediately after the incident, Shivamogga Deputy Commissioner R Selvakumar imposed prohibitory orders in Shivamogga city and Bhadravathi town.
