The BJP protest comes after JNU dismissed Akoijam from his teaching position on October 9 following an internal committee inquiry into sexual harassment complaints filed by around 11 female students according to the Indian Express. Delhi Police subsequently registered an FIR against him at Vasant Kunj North police station on October 11 under provisions of the BNS relating to sexual harassment and insulting a woman’s modesty.
Akoijam has denied the allegations, describing them as politically motivated and questioning the fairness of the university’s inquiry process.
In Karnataka, the Mahila Morcha workers were detained by police on Monday, 12 October, after attempting to march towards the Congress office in Bengaluru.
The protesters were stopped around 200 metres from the Congress office, where several women workers were detained. Police reportedly cited restrictions requiring demonstrations to be held at Freedom Park.
The protesters accused the Congress leadership of remaining silent over the allegations and demanded action against the MP.
“We are in Karnataka, and we will speak in Kannada. The reason I am wearing black is that they have plunged our state into darkness, and now they are trying to plunge the entire country into darkness,” a woman protester said.
“The Congress MP should be suspended. He has harassed women at JNU. Our demand is that he be suspended,” another protestor added.

In Punjab too, led by BJP women wing president Jai Inder Kaur, hundreds of protesters attempted to march towards the Congress office but were stopped by Chandigarh police. They were later detained.
According to a PTI report, questioning the Congress leadership, Kaur said, “Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge frequently speak about women’s safety and dignity, but why are they completely silent when serious allegations emerge against their own Member of Parliament?
“Is protecting their political interests more important than ensuring justice for women?”
“Women’s dignity and safety must never be compromised for political convenience. Congress must break its silence and take immediate action,” Kaur asserted.
