The Janata Dal (Secular) on Saturday, 15 April, released a list of six more candidates for the 10 May Assembly elections in Karnataka.

With this, the party has so far released a list of 149 candidates.

The first list, comprising 93 candidates, was released in December last year and 50 more on Friday.

The latest list

The party has fielded former Congress MLC Raghu Achar from Chitradurga. He recently joined the JD(S) after being denied a ticket by the Congress.

Dr Devaraj Patil, who also quit the Congress after being denied a ticket and joined the JD(S) on Saturday, has been fielded from Bagalkote.

The JD(S) has decided to field former minister AB Malaka Reddy from Yadgir. A party-hopper, Malaka Reddy was a Congress minister who had joined the BJP in 2019 ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

The Deve Gowda-led party has given a ticket to former MLA Dr Bharathi Shankar from Varuna against Congress heavyweight and former chief minister Siddaramaiah and BJP minister V Somanna.

MN Muthappa got a ticket from Madikeri, the district headquarters town of Kodagu district, and Amarashree has been fielded from Moodbidri.

Meanwhile, NR Santosh, who is a relative of former BJP chief minister BS Yediyurappa and served as his personal assistant but joined the JD(S) recently, was denied a ticket.

Santosh played a key role in toppling the coalition government of Congress and the JD(S) in 2019.

He was eyeing a BJP ticket from Arasikere, but the party snubbed him. A teary-eyed Santosh recently met JD(S) supremo Deve Gowda.

Candidates from previous lists

Ending the suspense over the Hassan seat, which had led to conflicts within the JD(S) first family, the party fielded HP Swaroop, overlooking JD(S) patriarch and former prime minister HD Deve Gowda’s daughter-in-law Bhavani Revanna, who had been firm on contesting from there.

However, her husband, HD Revanna, remains the party candidate for his incumbent seat of Holenarasipura.

Other names on the second list released on Friday included KS Lingesh for Belur, HK Kumaraswamy for Sakleshpura, and CN Balakrishna for Shravanabelagola.

YSV Datta, who had quit the JD(S) and joined the Congress, but returned to the party recently after being denied a ticket there, was fielded from Kadur.

Former minister A Manju, who recently joined the party, has been fielded from Arakalagudu. He has previously been with both the Congress and the BJP.

In the first list, HD Kumaraswamy’s son and actor Nikhil Kumaraswamy is being fielded from Ramanagara — a seat currently held by his mother and Kumaraswamy’s wife Anitha Kumaraswamy.
