The Bengaluru Police have ruled the death of an Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIM-B) student on Sunday, 5 January, as accidental.
The 28-year-old, Nilay Kailashbhai Patel, reportedly fell from his hostel’s second floor early Sunday morning after returning from birthday celebrations, according to Sarah Fathima, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East).
Speaking to South First, DCP Fathima said, “Nilay Kailashbhai Patel celebrated his birthday at his friend’s room on 4 January. He returned to his room after the birthday celebration.”
A case of unnatural death has been filed at the Mico Layout Police Station, and an investigation is ongoing.
Patel, a second-year student in the Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP), hailed from Gujarat and was preparing for upcoming placements.
Patel was found lying on the lawn beside the hostel at 6.30 a.m. by a campus security guard, following which he was rushed to the hospital.
Ruling out foul play, DCP Fathima further said, “As per the prima facie, he has accidentally fell from the second floor. He was brought dead to the hospital. We are waiting for the autopsy report. We have also informed his parents, who are arriving to Bengaluru from Gujarat.”
“We have interrogated his batchmates, friends and others in related to this death. We have not found any foul-paly so far. We will get more details only after the autopsy report is out.”
In a statement, IIM Bangalore expressed grief over Patel’s untimely death. “It is with profound sadness that IIM Bangalore shares the news of the untimely passing of our PGP 2023-25 student, Nilay Kailashbhai Patel,” read the post on X.
