Deceased Krishnappa
What was initially considered to be a road-accident death turned out to be murder when the deceased man’s son grew suspicious and launched a probe in central Bengaluru.
The series of incidents began when Krishnappa of Vyalikaval found he had run out of medicines on 15 November.
The 77-year-old diabetic took out his scooter to buy the necessary medicines from a nearby pharmacy around 8.30 pm. He was under treatment for cholesterol as well.
It would later emerge that a speeding motorcycle brushed against the scooter, almost throwing Krishnappa off balance.
It would also emerge that the motorcycle-rider picked up an argument with the septuagenarian on being admonished. The police said there were no immediate witnesses when the altercation took place.
Later, local residents and passersby would find Krishnappa lying on the road with a head injury. They shifted him to a hospital and informed his family.
The next day, on 16 November, Krishnappa died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital. The body was cremated on 17 November after a post-mortem examination.
The traffic police registered a case of a road accident on 16 November and began probing the incident.
However, the nature of Krishnappa’s injury did not look like an accident. The traffic police spotted a house with a CCTV camera. However, the residents were out when the officers visited the house.
Meanwhile, Krishnappa’s son Sathish felt something was off. His father had suffered a serious head injury from an apparent road accident, but the scooter did not have any scratch marks.
Sathish decided to conduct his own probe. When he went to the house, the residents were back. They allowed him to check the CCTV footage.
As he went through the footage, the series of events became clear. He saw the bike brushing against his father’s scooter and the argument that ensued.
To his horror, he also noticed the biker rider — a younger man — picking up a stone and hitting his father on the head before fleeing. The assailant was alone.
Sathish reported the matter to the police. The Vyalikaval police, too, inspected the CCTV visuals and soon arrested a 35-year-old welder named Abreez Pasha, who was a resident of the same area.
The police said he confessed to the crime. He has been charged with murder.
Ruling out any lapse on the traffic police who initially probed the case, the police said they had informed their law-and-order counterparts of the CCTV camera at the house.
