Eminent historian, columnist, environmentalist, and thinker Dr Ramachandra Guha has been selected for the “Mahatma Gandhi Seva Award – Karnataka” for the year 2025.
This prestigious award, instituted by the Department of Information and Public Relations, Government of Karnataka, is presented annually to individuals and institutions who have made significant contributions towards propagating the life values of Mahatma Gandhi in society.
To mark the birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, the Karnataka government has organised a series of programmes across the state with active participation from the public, schools, and college students.
As part of these celebrations, Guha has been chosen for this year’s award in recognition of his outstanding role in spreading Gandhian philosophy, values, and socially oriented thought among the people.

These works not only enrich historical scholarship but also reach ordinary readers in an accessible style, inspiring intellectual reflection within society, the public relations department said in a statement on Wednesday, 1 October.

“The conferment of this award on Dr. Guha is expected to further inspire the dissemination, dialogue, and study of Gandhian ideals in society,” said Hemant M. Nimbalkar, Commissioner, Department of Information and Public Relations.
Guha is a recipient of the Padma Bhushan. His India After Gandhi has won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2011.
