Hindu man in Karnataka says wife’s family forced Islamic wedding after video goes public

Synopsis: A Hindu man from Karnataka’s Gadag district has filed a police complaint alleging that his Muslim wife’s family coerced him into an Islamic wedding ceremony and pressured him to convert to Islam, despite their earlier registered marriage under the Special Marriage Act. His complaint came after a video of his Nikah went public.

A Hindu man from Karnataka’s Gadag district has lodged a police complaint alleging that his Muslim wife and her family coerced him into participating in an Islamic wedding ceremony and attempted to forcefully convert him to Islam.

This comes months after the couple had registered their marriage under the Special Marriage Act.

Based on the complaint filed by Vishalkumar Gokavi, Gadag Town Police registered a FIR on Wednesday, 16 July, invoking Sections 299 (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class) and 302 (protecting individuals from actions intended to harm their religious sentiments) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

In the complaint, Vishalkumar stated that he and Tahseen Hosamani had been in a relationship for three years before they married on 26 November 2024 through legal registration at the Gadag sub-registrar’s office.

“I was in love with a Muslim girl. We had been in a relationship for three years. Eventually, her family found out about our relationship. She told me, ‘If you ever get married, it has to be with me. If not, I’ll kill myself by jumping in front of a train, drinking poison, or rolling on the ground.’ She kept threatening me,” he stated in the complaint.

Out of fear, he agreed to a legal marriage. However, he alleges that subsequent pressure to convert led to further strain. A video of the Islamic wedding ceremony, held in a mosque, later surfaced on social media and quickly went viral.

Rohan Jagadish, Superintendent of Police, Gadag, confirmed that the couple had registered their marriage under the Special Marriage Act in November 2024 and later participated in a religious ceremony according to Muslim customs.

“A video began circulating on social media regarding an issue between a boy and a girl. The boy’s name is Vishal, who belongs to the Hindu community, and the girl’s name is Tehsin, from the Muslim community,” the SP said.

“From the initial information we have, the couple had known each other for the past three years and were in a relationship. They decided to get married. On 26 November 2024 they decided to enter into a marital agreement and they have registered their marriage in Gadag sub-registrar’s office under the Special Marriage Act. About five months later, they have decided to get married again as per Muslim traditions, and a video of which was also circulated on social media.”

Allegations of coercion

Vishalkumar, in his statement, alleged that he was forced to marry Tahseen again in a mosque on 25 April 2025 and follow Islamic practices.

“She said I should also marry her according to Islamic customs. When I refused, things escalated further. Members of the Jamaat gathered and began exerting pressure on me. They insisted, ‘You must attend Jamaat and follow our customs,’” the complaint reads.

He also claimed that Tahseen’s family pressured him repeatedly.

“Her uncle Ibrahim Saab Dawal Khan and her mother Begum Banu told her to convert me into their religion and make me attend Jamaat,” the complaint alleges.

Following the circulation of the video, Vishalkumar’s family reportedly conducted a Hindu wedding ceremony on 5 June 2025 outside their residence.

While Tahseen initially agreed to the Hindu ceremony, she later backed out due to pressure from her family, he alleged.

Meanwhile, SP Jagadish added that earlier this year, on 23 May, Vishalkumar was called to the Betageri Police Station  regarding concerns raised over conversion. “At that time, he gave a written statement and a video recording, both of which are with us, stating that he had no complaint,” the SP said.

However, following the recent complaint, the SP confirmed that the police would conduct a detailed investigation.

“We will investigate whether there was any marital disturbance between these both and if something has led to this aspect,” he said.
