Head-on collision of two private buses in Shivamogga kills 3, critically injures 8 others

The accident occurred at Kumudvathi river bridge in Choradi village, on the National Highway-69, at around 7.30 pm on Thursday.

Shivamogga bus accident

Three people were killed, while eight others sustained grievous injuries and were in critical condition after two private buses collided head-on in the Shivamogga district of Karnataka on the night of Thursday, 11 May.

The deceased were identified as Arun, the driver of one of the buses, Thippeswamy, and Mylappa, all three aged between 30 and 40, the police said.

One of the deceased, Thippeswamy was a resident of Hosadurga in Chitradurga.

30 people hospitalised

Around 30 people were admitted to the hospital with minor injuries, and would be discharged on Friday, the police added.

The accident occurred at Kumudvathi river bridge in Choradi village, on National Highway (NH) 69, at around 7.30 pm on Thursday.

A senior police officer from Shivamogga told South First that there was a slight curve at the spot and, seemingly, both the private buses were over-speeding at the time of the accident.

One of the buses belonged to Srinivasa Travels while the other belonged to Venkatamahalakshmi Transport. One was bound to Sagara from Shivamogga while the other one headed from Shikaripura to Shivamogga, the officer added.

The Kumsi police rushed to the spot and shifted the injured people to the NH Hospital and McGann Hospital.

Traffic disrupted

Earthmovers were called to the spot to clear the two buses from the road. Traffic movement was disrupted for a short while as the police created a diversion to keep vehicles moving on the highway.

“Three people were killed and eight persons are critically injured in the accident involving two private buses, in Doddapete circle,” Shivamogga Superintendent of Police (SP) GK Mithun Kumar told South First.

The SP and Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Shivamogga Selvamani R rushed to the accident spot and also visited the hospitals to console the injured passengers.

The Road Transport Officials (RTO) were also summoned to the accident spot to prepare a report on the accident.

“We will be doing an inquest on the accident around 10 am on Friday,” said a senior police officer from Kumsi station.
