The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made history on Tuesday, 8 October after securing a third consecutive term in the Haryana Assembly Elections 2024.
While the BJP has a comfortable majority with 48 seats according to the Election Commission of India, Congress has won just 37.
Speaking about Congress’ performance in the elections, Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar emphasised the need for introspection, stating “The party will assess what went wrong in Haryana. This is also a lesson for us. We need to be cautious with our next steps.”
Even though the Congress fell short of expectations, wrestler Vinesh Phogat emerged victorious in the Julana seat, and former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda won in Garhi Sampla-Kiloi.
Reacting to the disappointing results, Congress leader DK Shivakumar said that the party expected to win 50 seats. “We had confidence that people would vote for us,” he stated during a press conference in Hubballi, Karnataka.
He also stressed on the party’s conviction in the INDIA bloc’s potential to achieve a majority in Jammu and Kashmir and said, “We had confidence that INDIA bloc would get a majority in Jammu and Kashmir and we got results as per our expectations. People have saved this democracy.”
Shivakumar acknowledged the need for introspection following the Haryana results. “The party will assess what went wrong in Haryana. This is a lesson for us,” he remarked. He also spoke about the importance of accepting people’s mandate, particularly in a state recognised for prioritising development and farmer welfare.
Meanwhile, senior Congress leader and Karnataka minister Satish Jarkiholi reassured people about the leadership in Karnataka. Confirming that Siddaramaiah would continue as Chief Minister, he dispelled rumours about a potential change in leadership amidst the MUDA scam.
“The Congress high command has not discussed any transition regarding the Chief Minister’s position,” Jarkiholi told according to media reports.
On whether Shivakumar would take over as CM amid the controversy surrounding Siddaramaiah, the minister said, “I can only say that Siddaramaiah will be there as Chief Minister.”
