KEA to conduct exams for recruiting professors and nurses

In a major decision aimed at maintaining transparency in the recruitment process, Karnataka Medical Education Minister Dr Sharanprakash Rudrappa Patil on Wednesday, 7 August directed the Department of Medical Education (DME) to fill Group A vacancies only through the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) by conducting competitive exams.

The minister instructed the officials to immediately take steps to recruit 650 Assistant Professors and 1,200 nurses through KEA.

Chairing a crucial meeting with DME officials at Karnataka Vikasa Soudha, Minister Dr Patil said that he was not satisfied with the current recruitment process. The current process involves people being recruited by heads of the respective medical colleges or institutions.

However, there have been allegations of corruption and nepotism in the recruitment process. So the minister wants a slew of measures implemented to regulating the recruitment process. The vacancies to be filled are spread across 33 government institutions which come under the DME and include 22 medical colleges and 11 super speciality hospitals across Karnataka.

The Minister’s decision is aimed at maintaining transparency and competition in the recruitment process and checking irregularities, if any. The move comes amid the alleged irregularities and controversies surrounding both NEET UG and PG exams that have been rocking the entire country.

The minister added that the department’s recruitment bylaws would be amended to pave the way for KEA to conduct tests to recruit people to fill the vacant posts.

It is important to note that the proposal to recruit nurses through KEA was sent by the government couple of years back but KEA had responded that it would be difficult for it conduct examination in the absence of proper Cadre and Recruitment (C&R) rules and roaster system.

C&R rules are what guidelines and regulations that govern the hiring, promotion, and other employment-related processes for various positions.

When the KEA’s response was brought to minister Patil’s notice, he directed the DME to follow the C&R rules applicable for recruitment of nurses under Health and Family Welfare department.

For the smooth transition of recruitment process from the current scenario to KEA, Dr Patil instructed director of medical education Dr Sujatha Rathod to constitute an expert committee. This committee will frame the syllabus, which would help in KEA’s tests to recruit people.
