France has conferred the Chevalier de l’Ordre national du Mérite (Knight of the National Order of Merit), its second-highest national order of distinction, on Indian cardiac surgeon and Narayana Health founder Dr Devi Shetty, recognising his contribution to the French community in Bengaluru during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Consulate General of France in Bengaluru announced the honour on Thursday, 5 November, and presented it at a ceremony at Narayana Health City.
Dr Shetty is being recognised for extending medical and logistical support to the French Consulate and the wider French community during the pandemic, particularly through vaccination initiatives and other assistance, at a time when healthcare systems faced unprecedented challenges.
“We are delighted to recognise Dr Devi Shetty for his generosity and unwavering support to the French community in Bangalore during the pandemic. His actions reflect the true spirit of solidarity and the enduring friendship between France and India,” said Marc Lamy, Consul General of France in Bengaluru.
Responding to the recognition, Dr Shetty said the support extended during the pandemic was an effort to help a community facing a difficult period.
“I am truly honoured to receive this recognition from the Government of France. During the pandemic, we were happy to extend our support to the French community in Bangalore. It was a difficult time for everyone, and standing together and helping one another was what mattered most. I am grateful to our teams who made this possible,” he said.
Established on 3 December 1963 by French President Charles de Gaulle, the Ordre national du Mérite is one of France’s two national orders of distinction, ranking below the Legion of Honour.
It recognises distinguished service and contributions by French citizens and foreign nationals across civilian and military fields, in both the public and private sectors. The order has five grades: Knight, Officer, Commander, Grand Officer and Grand Cross.
Dr Shetty has been recognised for his contribution to healthcare delivery through his work as a cardiac surgeon and institution builder. His career has focused on expanding access to medical care through technology, innovative healthcare delivery models and large-scale hospital networks.
