Basavaraj Bommai heart surgery

Former Karnataka chief minister Basavaraj Bommai, who recently underwent heart surgery — Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) — and is recovering at a private hospital in Bengaluru, on Sunday, 22 October, said that he would get well soon and return to serve people.

He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called him to inquire about his health.

“Shubha Ashtami Day, it’s my luckiest day. My hearty thanks to our beloved Prime Minister Sri Narendra Modi for calling me to inquire about my health while taking rest in hospital. Your concern and wishes have increased by self confidence. I will get well soon and return to serve people,” Bommai said in a post on X.

The surgery

His condition involved multiple blockages in his coronary arteries, necessitating this critical medical intervention.

The 63-year-old BJP leader’s recovery has been excellent. He is anticipated to regain full functionality in just a couple of weeks, doctors treating him have said.

“Five days ago I did an off-pump ( beating heart) bypass surgery on Bommai with five grafts. It was for a severe and diffuse triple vessel disease following a warning of a significant unstable angina. Though a Brittle diabetic, his recovery was swift,” said Dr Vivek Jawali who treated the former CM.

Bommai’s health scare began with preliminary investigations that raised suspicion of multiple blockages in his heart. Following an angiogram, severe and diffuse blockages were discovered in all three coronary arteries.

This diagnosis and recent warning symptoms posed a potential risk of an impending heart attack, demanding early surgical intervention, said the hospital in a release.

A team of cardiac surgeons and anaesthetists led by Dr Vivek Jawali performed the CABG surgery. The procedure involved the placement of five grafts on the beating heart to address all obstructed coronary arteries.
