On adult tiger and four cubs have been found dead in unnatural conditions in the Male Mahadeshwara Hills forest region.
Following which, Forest, Environment, and Ecology Minister Eshwar B Khandre has expressed sorrow and has ordered a probe under the leadership of the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF).
The minister has issued written instructions to the Additional Chief Secretaries and Chief Wildlife Wardens, stating that the government is taking the deaths of four tigers very seriously and has directed that strict action be taken against those found responsible.
Highlighting the importance of tiger conservation, Khandre recalled that it was former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi who launched Project Tiger to protect the endangered species. Karnataka has since taken strong measures to conserve tigers and is ranked second in the country with a population of 563 tigers.
“In a state known for tiger conservation, the unnatural death of four tigers in a single day is deeply painful,” he said.
He has directed the formation of a team led by the PCCF to immediately visit the site and investigate the cause of death. If forest staff are found to be negligent, or if the deaths were caused by electrocution, poisoning, or any other deliberate act, criminal cases must be filed against those responsible.
He also instructed that the investigation report be submitted within three days.
