Synopsis: Nine people were killed and 17 others injured on Friday evening when a refrigerated truck rammed into a Ganesh idol immersion procession in Karnataka’s Hassan district. The accident took place in Mosale Hosahalli village of Holenarasipura taluk, where participants were dancing to DJ music on the road. Bystander videos show the truck, apparently out of control and moving at high speed, running over those in the procession. The injured driver has been taken into custody.

Nine people were killed on the evening of Friday, 12 September, when a refrigerated truck ploughed into a Ganesh idol immersion procession in Karnataka’s Hassan district.

Superintendent of Police, Hassan, on Friday night confirmed that five victims died on the spot and three succumbed to injuries in hospital.

By Saturday, 13 September, the death toll rose to nine, and the number of injured being treated in Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences (HIMS) Hospital rose to 17.

Among those hospitalised, two patient are in ICU, with one being taken for surgery for rib fracture.

Videos recorded by bystanders show people dancing to DJ music on the road during the immersion procession in Holenarasipura taluk, Mosale Hosahalli village, when the truck, appearing out of control and at high speed, ran over participants.

Emergency services rushed the injured to nearby hospitals. The truck driver has been taken into custody but is himself undergoing treatment for injuries.

CM Siddaramaiah announces compensation

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced ₹5 lakh compensation for each of the deceased’s families and said the state would bear the cost of treatment for those injured.

“This is a moment of immense pain. Let us all stand with the families of the accident victims,” the Chief Minister’s official handle said in a post on X.

MLAs HD Revanna and Suraj Revanna visited the site late at night and gathered details from officials about the incident. Hassan MP Shreyas Patel also visited the accident spot, collected information, and instructed the authorities to take immediate action.

“I am deeply shocked to hear the news of a horrific accident during the Ganapati immersion procession at Mosalehosahalli in Hassan taluk, where several people lost their lives and more than 20 were seriously injured… The State Government must take steps to provide the best free treatment to the injured,” JD(S) leader and Union Minister for Heavy Industries HD Kumaraswamy said in a post on X.

JD(S) Youth President Nikhil Kumaraswamy is also expected to visit the accident site and later the hospital where the injured are being treated.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressed his condolences and issued an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh for deceased, and a compensation of ₹50,000 for the injured from PMNRF.

The post from Prime Minister’s Office read: “The mishap in Hassan, Karnataka, is heart-rending. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. I hope those who have been injured recover at the earliest. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000: PM”
