Synopsis: Five people were stabbed by unknown miscreants during Kannada Rajyotsava celebrations in Belagavi. The victims, who were all residents of Nehru Nagar. The police have initiated an investigation to trace the attackers.

Unknown miscreants stabbed five people during Kannada Rajyotsava celebrations in Belagavi in Karnataka on Saturday, 1 November. The incident occurred when the crowd was celebrating near the Laxmi Complex in Sadashiva Nagar, where miscreants suddenly entered the procession and stabbed five people before fleeing the scene.

Three of the injured were being treated at Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital, while the other two were taken to a private hospital. One of them also suffered a head injury.

The victims, who were all residents of Nehru Nagar, have been identified as Sachin Kamble, Gurunath Vakkund, Lokesh Betageri, Mahesh and Nazir Pathan. One of the victims said they were dancing during the celebrations near the Laxmi complex when unknown people started attacking.

Investigation ongoing

The APMC Police Station in Belagavi has registered an FIR and initiated an investigation to trace the attackers. Police officials told South First that efforts are still ongoing to nab the accused.

“We are still trying to trace the accused with the help of CCTV footage. We suspect that a fight erupted between those who were celebrating and the attackers. They might have come from outside the district,” an official from the APMC Police Station said.

Belagavi Police Commissioner Bhushan Borase and other senior police officials visited the BIMS hospital to assess the situation.

Meanwhile, celebrations in other parts of the district began as the clock struck twelve on Saturday. Thousands of Kannada enthusiasts gathered in large numbers at Chennamma Circle in Belagavi City to celebrate the state’s formation day.

A fireworks show was also organised under the leadership of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (Narayan Gowda faction).

At the same time, Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti (MES), a group that has been demanding the merger of the Belagavi district of Karnataka with Maharashtra, held a “Black Day” protest on Saturday opposing Karnataka’s Kannada Rajyotsava celebrations.

Hundreds of MES activists gathered at Sambhaji Garden in Belagavi and raised slogans against the Karnataka government.
