Extorted by man posing as CBI officer, BESCOM employee dies by suicide

Synopsis: A BESCOM employee has died by suicide after allegedly being extorted by a man posing as a Central Bureau of Investigation officer. In a handwritten note, the victim detailed how he was repeatedly threatened and coerced into transferring ₹11 lakh to multiple bank accounts. 

A Bengaluru Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) employee died by suicide after allegedly being extorted by a person claiming to be from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), under the threat of arrest.

The victim, reportedly a resident of HSR Layout in Bengaluru, left behind a handwritten note describing how he was blackmailed and coerced into transferring a total of ₹11 lakh to multiple bank accounts.

“A person named Vikram Goswami, from the CBI, called me and said that I had an arrest warrant. He threatened me and then called me again, telling me to deposit ₹1.95 lakh into an account, and sent me the account number. I was very frightened and did as I was told,” the note reads.

“Afterwards, they continued to call me repeatedly, instructing me to send money to various accounts. In this way, they took a total of ₹11 lakh from me. They then contacted my personal number and WhatsApp numbers, saying they would send more account numbers and demanded ₹2.75 lakh. They harassed me to send the money.”

The HSR Layout Police, in a statement on X, said the incident occurred in MK Doddi, in Ramanagara district.

“The incident mentioned in this complaint took place under the jurisdiction of the M K Doddi Police Station in Ramanagara district, and a case has been registered and an investigation is ongoing.”

The note also included an emotional appeal to his family to take care of his young son.
