In a tragic incident that unfolded on Friday, 16 February, at approximately 1:55 pm, Satyam Suman, a 20-year-old student hailing from Bihar, ended his life by suicide at Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) in Karnataka.

Suman was a second-year BSc Respiratory Therapy student at the institution in Manipal, Karnataka.

The incident

On the day of the incident, Suman had attended an exam being conducted at the university. During the exam, Suman was reportedly caught using his mobile phone inside the examination hall, a senior police officer with the Manipal Police told South First.

Subsequently, the university authorities expelled him from the exam hall. They further summoned him to provide a statement regarding the violation. The university requested Suman to report to another block for the recording of his statement, the senior officer informed.

However, instead of complying with the university’s instructions, Suman chose a different course of action. He retreated to the hostel and ascended to the terrace of the six-storey building. Tragically, he took his own life by jumping to his death.

The Manipal Police have initiated an investigation into the incident, registering it as an unnatural death.
