Santro Ravi arrested from Ahmedabad in Gujarat on Friday

The estranged wife of alleged human trafficker Manjunath KS alias ‘Santro’ Ravi and her sister have lodged a fresh complaint, seeking legal action against him and seven other police personnel for falsely implicating the sisters in a case.

The women complained to the Karnataka state police chief, DG-IGP Praveen Sood, saying they were forced to spend 23 days in Parappana Agrahara Central Prison for a crime they had not committed.

The police personnel named in the complaint included inspector Praveen KY. The inspector was transferred a few days before the Crime Branch wing of the Gujarat Police arrested Ravi from Ahmedabad on 13 January.

Though transferred to the Intelligence Department, the officer was later placed under suspension after the Deputy Commissioner of Police (West division) submitted a probe report against Praveen.

It was reported that there was enough evidence against the inspector who allegedly acted against the two sisters and fabricated a case against them at Ravi’s behest.

South First has accessed the complaint, which was filed on 21 January.

The case according to the complainants

In her complaint to Sood, the younger woman, a BSc student, accused Ravi and the police officers of ruining her dream of pursuing a career as a paramedic.

She complained that Ravi had married her sister at an advocate’s house in Srirampura on 8 May, 2019. The elder sister returned to her parents’ house on 18 October after Ravi’s physical and mental harassment became unbearable.

Ravi had then taken away the woman’s phone and jewellery, and they were not in contact ever since she returned home.

In November 2022, the younger woman stated in the complaint that she started working part-time at a company. Ravi visited their house in Mysore on 26 November, 2022, saying his mother had suffered a heart attack and he wanted to end his relationship with his wife.

The student asked Ravi to return in the evening when her brother and parents would be home. She said in the complaint that instead of Ravi, four policemen in plainclothes visited their home, saying a case was registered against the sisters.

A robbery case

The officers allegedly took the sisters with them, first to the Jayalakshmipuram police station, where the station house officer refused to proceed with the case since the alleged crime was committed outside of his jurisdictional limits.

The women were then taken to the Vijayanagar police station, where they were told that the case would be registered at the Cottonpete police station in Bengaluru.

The complainant said that they were brought to the Cottonpete police station around 12.30 am and subjected to a medical examination at the KC General Hospital in Malleswaram.

They were subsequently lodged in a state-run home for women.

The next morning, on 27 November, 2022, the sisters were taken back to the Cottonpete police station where they had to wait until 11.30 am. Police sub-inspector Ravi MM, who questioned them, demanded to know where they hid weapons, and the women were reportedly reprimanded when they pleaded innocence.

Later, Ravi told the women that they had robbed a man, Prakash, in Cottonpete police limits with help of accused number three, Sheik Salauddin. The sisters were accused of robbing a gold chain weighing 13 grams and ₹9,000 in cash on 23 November.

Sisters deny charge

The women were allegedly abused when they told the police that they were not in the city at the time of the alleged crime.

Though the women’s parents arrived at the station along with an advocate, they were not granted station bail. Afterward Inspector Praveen, too, questioned them, and they were produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.

The women alleged in their complaint that legal action should be initiated against Inspector Praveen, Sub,-inspector Ravi, Muthu Naik, Yasin and Rafiullah, and two women constables, Veereshamma, and Radha.

They claimed that the police personnel had colluded with Ravi and filed a false and frivolous complaint misusing their official positions.
