Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Wednesday, 1 October, said that only Karnataka has a mechanism where citizens can report potholes to authorities.
“Filling potholes is a continuous process. I am doing an inspection of the works to check the quality of work. We will also hold meetings with citizens about the quality of road work. And are doing the road repair work diligently, let there not be any doubts about the quality. We are also asphalting the areas around the potholes. In some of the places, we are asphalting an entire stretch,” he said.
The deputy chief minister further added, “There are 1.20 crore vehicles in the city and a floating vehicle population of 50 lakh. Our roads are managing such a huge load. We are also white topping many stretches for higher durability.”
Shivakumar earlier too said, “We have prepared an app where public can report potholes. We are also taking the help of the police to identify potholes. Bengaluru is a global city and hence the issue is being highlighted.”
The issue of potholes on Bengaluru’s roads had become a major political issue, with the Opposition BJP criticising the government.
On Tuesday, 30 September, too, DK Shivakumar refuted BJP’s claim that a college student’s death in a road accident in Bengaluru was caused by potholes. “It is all false. They (BJP) are only spreading a hoax. Because of them, all this has been created,” he said.
His remarks came a day after a college student died in Bengaluru after a tipper truck knocked her down and crushed her while she was allegedly trying to avoid a pothole near Budigere Cross.
The state’s BJP handle said in a post on X, “It is unfortunate that a student has lost her life to a pothole in the Silicon City! The roads of Bengaluru, which should have facilitated smooth traffic, are now endangering the lives of commuters every day, exposing the poor performance of Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar.”

On Tuesday, he also said that 13,000 potholes had been filled till now and added that the media could inspect the video and photographic proof of the work.
Speaking to reporters after inspecting the pothole filling activities around the city, DK Shivakumar, who also holds the Bengaluru Development portfolio, said, “The officials are filling potholes as per the directions of the government. We have also instructed officials to prepare a ₹1,100 crore plan to develop main arterial roads.”
“To lay concrete at the junctions of arterial roads, we would need 26 more days. We are discussing modalities of traffic management at these places. I am trying to bring in a permanent solution for Bengaluru roads,” he said.
“It has been decided to release ₹1,100 crore to MLAs to develop roads at the ward level. The legislators have been given clear instructions to spend this money for road development and maintenance,” he added.
Asked about BJP leaders’ statement that there are no potholes on the road to PM’s residence, he said, “Let them come with me to Delhi, I will show them around the potholes there. I have seen them while going from Karnataka Bhawan.”
