Doddalahalli Kempegowda Shivakumar will take charge as Karnataka’s 18th Chief Minister at a ceremony to be held at the Lok Bhavan premises at 4.05 pm on Wednesday, 3 June.
On Saturday, 30 May, Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot invited DK Shivakumar to take the oath of office and secrecy, after the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) had elected him to replace Siddaramaiah.
“I invite you to take oath as the Chief Minister of Karnataka along with team members,” the invitation from the Governor said.
The invitation was extended to Shivakumar, the Deputy Chief Minister and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President, after he had staked a claim to form the government.
“The Congress Legislature Party, Karnataka, consisting of 135 members of the Indian National Congress, 2 associated members and 1 Raita Sangha MLA, has unanimously elected me as the Leader of the Congress Legislature Party on 30th May 2026,” the KPCC President said while staking claim to form the government.
Earlier in the day, the CLP meeting elected Shivakumar as its leader. After he was elected the CLP leader, Shivakumar moved a resolution thanking Siddaramaiah for his service to the state and the Congress party. The CLP unanimously adopted the resolution.
“The Congress Legislative Party expresses its heartfelt gratitude to Shri Siddaramaiah for his invaluable service to the people of Karnataka and the Congress party,” the resolution said.
“People, as well as party workers, will forever fondly and proudly remember his stint as the Chief Minister between 2013 and 2018 and 2023 and 2026, as well as his role twice as the leader of the Opposition.

“His dedication to social justice, administrative acumen, commitment to the party’s ideology and his complete trust in the party’s leadership are an inspiration to every Congress worker and an example to follow.
The Congress party and the government will always follow in his footsteps. We thank him from the bottom of our hearts. We will always wish for his continued guidance and support for the Congress party’s aim of transformational development in every sector and the service of the people,” it added.

Siddaramaiah stepped down as Chief Minister on Thursday, 28 May, two days after the Congress central leadership, specifically Rahul Gandhi, urged him to resign to make way for the future leadership in Karnataka.
Governor Gehlot accepted Siddaramaiah’s resignation on Friday.
Before submitting his resignation, Siddaramaiah had held a breakfast meeting with Cabinet colleagues. Photographs from the meeting showed Shivakumar seeking Siddaramaiah’s blessings.
A day before tendering his resignation, Siddaramaiah had accepted the Backward Classes Commission’s Socio-Economic and Educational survey, widely known as the caste survey. The survey’s acceptance is expected to have long-lasting ramifications for the next Cabinet.

The selection of Shivakumar as the Chief Minister has put an end to speculations of power sharing in the State.
Siddaramaiah has ruled out moving to the Rajya Sabha, but said he would remain active in Karnataka politics and fight against communal forces till “his last breath”.
“I have told them that I will not be able to go to the Rajya Sabha. I will remain in state politics. The people have elected me for five years. There are still two years left. I will continue to serve as an MLA on behalf of the people of my constituency. I have said that I will fight against communal forces. If you ask about my political role, that is it,” he said on Friday.
