Three days after a 10-year-old boy was thrown to death by a guest teacher at a government school in Karnataka’s Gadag, the Class IV student’s mother, too, died of injuries sustained in the incident on Thursday, 22 December.

The mother, Geeta Barakar (35), too, was a teacher at the same school. The guest teacher, Muthappa Yellappa Hadagali (33), attacked her with a spade when she went to the first floor to check on her son, Bharat Barakar. The police said she was hit on the nape of her neck.

Hadagali had smashed the boy against the walls and pillars of the school building before tossing him off the first floor, after locking up other students in a classroom.

The accused also assaulted another teacher, Sangana Gowda Patil, who had rushed to Geeta’s rescue.

The injured mother and son were rushed to the KIMS Hospital in Hubballi, where the boy died on Monday, 19 December. Geeta was also undergoing treatment in the same hospital.

A fatal love triangle

Preliminary investigation revealed that a triangular extra-marital relationship had led to the double murder. Hadagali and Geetha had reportedly been in a relationship while they both were working as guest teachers in a Gadag school.

Hadagali, also married with two children, recently noticed Geetha distancing herself from him and warming up to Sangana Gowda Patil. Incensed, the guest teacher threatened her but she did not relent, the police quoted him as saying.

He reportedly told the police that he harmed Bharat to take revenge on Geetha. Incidentally, Patil, too, was married and had been living with his family in Hadli village.

Geetha is survived by her husband and daughter.

Hadigali, who fled the scene after committing the scene, was later arrested and remanded in judicial custody. The police were waiting to record Geetha’s statement when she died.

A senior police officer told South First that Hadigali had been charged with two counts of murder. The investigating Naragund police recorded the statement of the complainant, Patil, and other eyewitnesses.
