Days after seeking deletion of 243 eligible Muslim and Christian voters, K’taka BJP leader withdraws Form 7 objections
The withdrawal comes amid reports of bulk filing of Form 7 objections during the final days of the claims and objections period on 22, 23 and 24 September.
Synopsis: A BJP leader in Karnataka’s Koppa taluk has withdrawn Form 7 objections seeking the deletion of 243 Muslim and Christian voters from the electoral rolls. HK Dinesh said he withdrew the objections after finding that the voters were still at the same polling stations. The move comes amid allegations of bulk Form 7 filings seeking the deletion of eligible minority voters during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of the electoral rolls.
A BJP leader in Koppa, Chikkamagaluru district, Karnataka, has withdrawn objections seeking the deletion of 243 voters from the electoral rolls, days after reports of bulk filing of Form 7 objections seeking deletion of eligible voters from minority communities, particularly Muslims, during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
In a letter dated 1 October to the Assistant Electoral Registration Officer and Tahsildar of Koppa, HK Dinesh said he had filed the objections on 21 and 22 September on the ground that the voters did not reside at the addresses recorded in the electoral rolls.
He has now withdrawn the objections, stating that the 243 voters were still at the same polling stations.
The applications concerned 243 Muslim and Christian voters across 37 polling stations in Koppa taluk. Dinesh was among those accused of seeking their deletion, along with BJP taluk leaders Arjun, Halappa, Karthik and Brijesh.
The objections stated that the voters did not reside at their registered addresses or at the addresses given in the electoral rolls.
One of the applications sought the deletion of Booth Level Officer Wazir Khan of Kattamane and members of his family from polling station No. 154 at Jayapura Pete. Halappa submitted an application seeking deletion of 25 voters belonging to six households of the Peer Khan family in the area.
The withdrawal comes amid reports of bulk filing of Form 7 objections during the final days of the claims and objections period on 22, 23 and 24 September.
Chief Minister DK Shivakumar cited about 3,000 Form 7 applications in Belagavi North, 6,259 in Mudigere, 1,373 in Babaleshwar, 1,200 in Narasimha Raja and 2,285 in Bhalki, besides similarly large numbers in other constituencies.
The Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer, V Anbukkumar, subsequently directed Electoral Registration Officers in all 224 Assembly constituencies to act against applicants who knowingly make false declarations in Form 7.
The Karnataka police have registered at least three FIRs naming BJP leaders, among others, in Belagavi, Bidar and Mysuru districts over allegations of bulk filing of Form 7 objections targeting eligible voters from minority communities, particularly Muslims.
