Mosque secretary hacked to death in Dakshina Kannada

Synopsis: Abdul Rahman, a secretary at a mosque, was hacked to death and another man seriously injured in a sword attack by unidentified assailants in Bantwal taluk, Dakshina Kannada. Police have launched an investigation, with additional forces deployed to prevent communal tension in the area.

A man was hacked to death and another person injured in a brutal attack in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada district on Tuesday, 27 May.

According to police, the incident occurred in Ira Kodi near Kolathamajalu while Abdul Rahman, a pick-up vehicle driver and a secretary at a mosque, was unloading sand.

Two unidentified men arrived on a motorcycle and attacked him and his associate with a sword.

Rahman died on the spot, while the other victim, who sustained serious injuries, has been admitted to hospital.

Police have launched an investigation and are yet to identify the attackers or determine the motive behind the killing.

The incident comes weeks after the murder of a known rowdy-sheeter, Suhas Shetty, in the region, raising concerns about communal tensions.

Security has been tightened in the area to prevent any unrest.

Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister Dinesh Gundu Rao condemned the killing.

“The murder of Abdul Rahman near Kolathamajalu is deeply disturbing. The motive is not yet known, but I have spoken to the Home Minister and senior police officials,” he said.

He also alleged a larger plan to disrupt communal harmony in the district.

“There seems to be a systematic attempt to disturb peace in Dakshina Kannada. I have directed officials to take strong action and maintain law and order,” he added.

The minister appealed to the public to remain calm and not fall prey to rumours.
