To tackle cattle grazing in forests, Karnataka Forest Department has launched a CSR-backed pilot project in Male Mahadeshwara Hills Wildlife Sanctuary.
Ten families, previously working for Tamil Nadu cattle owners, received hybrid cows and agreed not to graze them in forests. Violators face action under the Wildlife Protection and Forest Acts.
The project, formally announced on 16 July, follows the poisoning death of a tigress and cubs. With families now earning up to ₹600/day through dairy, more farmers are showing interest.
Talks are ongoing with corporate firms, farmer groups, and milk unions to expand the initiative.
