Synopsis: Three members of a family, including a three-year-old child, were killed as a hill collapsed on their makeshift shed in Karnataka’s Shivamogga. The incident happened at 2:30 AM in the morning on Sunday. The family was asleep when the hill collapsed onto their home. Several parts of Karnataka, including coastal districts, have witnessed flooding and other incidents as rain continues to batter southern states.
A couple and their three-year-old child were killed after a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall buried a makeshift shed in Shivamogga district’s Indira Nagar on Sunday.
According to police, the incident happened at around 2.30 am, and the family was fast asleep when the hill collapsed on them. The debris crashed onto the shed, leaving the family trapped under mud and rubble.
Police and Fire and Emergency Services personnel had to struggle for several hours to retrieve the bodies from the debris, with continuous rainfall posing a challenge to the rescue efforts.
The deceased have been identified as Mallikarjun (35), Nagaveni (28), and Santosh (3), migrant workers from Kokkaregara village in Gangavathi taluk of Koppal district.
Several people living in a neighbouring shed also sustained serious injuries. They have been admitted to the Jayachamarajendra Hospital in Thirthahalli and their condition is being closely monitored.
BJP MLA Araga Jnanendra visited the spot and urged the state government to provide compensation to the bereaved family.
The incident came as parts of Karnataka witnessed incessant rainfall, causing similar landslides, waterlogging and flooding, especially in the Malnad and coastal regions.
Parts of the Kodagu district witnessed flooding, disrupting transport and connectivity to rural areas.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more rain over several regions and issued orange alerts for five districts.
The weather department has issued orange alersts for Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru districts while, yellow alerts have been issued for Hassan and Kodagu districts.
The district administrations have kept the disaster response teams on standby while people have been advised to stay at home and exercise caution if they are travelling as more intense rainfall is expected in the coming days.
