Cockroach infestation was found in the food preparation and storage areas of several prominent clubs in Bengaluru during food safety inspections conducted by the Health Department on August 25, officials said.
The inspections covered eight clubs, including the Bowring Club, Century Club, Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) Club, Catholic Club, Tennis Club, Vijayanagara Club, Mahalakshmi Layout Club and Malleswaram Club.
According to the Health Department, cockroach infestation was detected at Bowring Club, Century Club and Malleswaram Club, following which notices were issued to the establishments for the violations.
At Bowring Club, officials found cockroaches in the food storage area. At Century Club, the infestation was detected in the storage area, along with other deficiencies involving expired or improperly stored food products.
At Malleswaram Club, cockroach infestation was found in the food preparation area, along with lapses in hygiene and food storage practices.
The inspections were conducted to assess compliance with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the Food Safety and Standards Rules, 2011, the Health Department said.
At KSCA Club, officials flagged deficiencies in the storage of frozen and other food items, as well as issues with the hot-water system used for sanitation, according to the department.
At Catholic Club, inspectors found deficiencies in the food preparation area and issues related to mushroom handling. The notice also flagged concerns involving food handlers and required the establishment to take corrective measures.
The Tennis Club was found to have deficiencies concerning medical certificates for food handlers, while inspections at Vijayanagara Club and Mahalakshmi Layout Club revealed lapses related to food preparation, hygiene and storage.
The Health Department said notices had been issued to the establishments concerned and further action would be taken under food safety laws based on the inspection findings.
Officials also checked drinking water and cooking oil as part of the drive. Used cooking oil was collected for examination, while samples were taken for testing wherever required.
The inspections come amid increasing scrutiny of food hygiene practices at restaurants, clubs and other establishments serving food to the public in Bengaluru. The department said establishments found violating food safety requirements would face action under the applicable provisions of law.
