Synopsis: A Class 6 student’s death after allegedly collapsing while jogging has sparked family protests and abuse allegations against teachers, as police investigate amid disputed CCTV footage and no official response yet from the school.
A 12-year-old student of a residential school in Kadayarappanahalli village, Bengaluru North Taluk, died under suspicious circumstances on Wednesday, 8 July.
The boy’s death led to protests from his family, who alleged assault by teachers.
The deceased has been identified as Gurukiran, a Class 6 student and son of Raghavendra, a resident of Subedarpalya.
According to Sterling English Residential School, Gurukiran collapsed while jogging on the campus early in the morning. The school informed his parents around 6 am that he had fallen ill and been taken to a hospital.
By the time the family reached the hospital, the boy had died. A close relative, Yashasvini, alleged that the family was initially not allowed to see the body when they arrived. Later, they learnt that school staff had taken him to a different hospital.
The boy’s family rejected the school’s account and alleged that he was physically assaulted by teachers using iron rods and sticks that contributed to his death. His father told reporters that he was suspecting foul play, and added that the school’s explanation didn’t match what he found when he arrived.
A relative went further, alleging that CCTV cameras at the school had been deliberately disabled and claiming that other students had said corporal punishment was common at the school.
Tensions escalated at the scene, with angry parents reportedly confronting the school’s physical education teacher, prompting police intervention. Authorities have launched an investigation into the exact cause of death. The school has not yet issued a public response, and phone calls to the institution went unanswered.
No arrests have been recorded. Bagalur police are investigating.
