The Karnataka government has revoked the suspension of three senior IPS officers who were suspended following the 4 June 2025 stampede outside Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium, according to an official government release issued on Tuesday, 14 July.

The government said it accepted the findings of both the judicial inquiry headed by Justice John Michael Cunha and a departmental inquiry, which did not find grounds to continue disciplinary action against the officers.

Subsequently, the suspension orders against former Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda, Additional Commissioner of Police (West) Vikash Kumar Vikash, and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Shekar H Tekkannavar have been revoked.

The three officers were among five senior police officials suspended in the aftermath of the stampede, which claimed 11 lives and left several others injured during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL victory celebrations. The incident triggered widespread criticism over crowd management and the planning of the victory celebrations.

The latest decision comes months after the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) quashed the suspension of Vikash, observing that there was insufficient material to establish negligence on his part.

The tribunal had also recommended that the state government consider revoking the suspensions of the other senior officers, noting that the police had limited time to make security arrangements and that the event had proceeded despite the absence of formal police permission.

Following the stampede, the Bengaluru Police registered criminal cases against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, event management firm DNA Entertainment Networks Pvt. Ltd., and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) over alleged lapses in organising the event. Investigations and legal proceedings in the case are continuing.

The three IPS officers were cleared after the government accepted the findings of the judicial and departmental inquiries, paving the way for their reinstatement.
