BPCL Launches Geocell Technology to Repurpose Plastic Waste for Road Construction(Representational image/BPCL blog)
Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), in collaboration with the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), has unveiled Geocell, an innovative technical textile that repurposes end-of-life and mixed plastic waste, including multi-layered plastics, for road infrastructure. Developed by BPCL’s R&D Centre, the technology has been successfully trialed with TATA Projects, proving its technical and economic viability. On July 11, 2025, India’s first field trial using this material was inaugurated on Loop No. 1 of the DND–Faridabad–KMP Expressway in New Delhi.
The trial spans 1,280 sq. meters and uses 20–25 tonnes of waste plastic. This initiative is a joint effort by BPCL, CRRI, and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), aligning with the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan and India’s Net Zero targets. Beyond its environmental benefits, the Geocell improves road durability and performance. This marks a significant step in circular economy practices and could set new global benchmarks in sustainable infrastructure development.
